Today the wonderful fortress is located on a hill, 20 km from Andria, inside the National Park of Alta Murgia. It was built in 1240 and became the home of the court of Frederick II of Hohenstaufen, the king of the kingdom of Sicily. Castel del Monte has been part of the list of UNESCO heritage since 1996. This castle is a unique structure, thanks to its octagonal plan. It is thought that it was used as an Astronomical Observatory or a hunting lodge.
