The walk to 25 Fontes in Rabaçal is a must-see attraction for anyone visiting Madeira.
The trail provides a beautiful and peaceful escape into nature, and the impressive waterfall at the end is well worth the effort to get there.
The walk is approximately 13km and can take up to 2.5 hours to complete.
The trail winds through a lush forest, passing by a variety of trees, plants, and wildlife. The path is well-maintained and relatively flat, but there are some steep sections that require careful footing. Along the way, visitors will cross small streams and waterfalls, providing refreshing breaks from the warm, humid air.
The highlight of the walk is the 25 Fontes, which means “25 springs” in Portuguese. The waterfall is located at the end of the trail and is an impressive sight to behold. The waterfall cascades down a cliff face, with the water divided into 25 streams that flow into a natural pool at the base of the waterfall.
Visitors can take a dip in the pool, but the water is quite cold, so be prepared for the shock of the chilly water. The walk back to the parking area is along the same trail, but the return trip is generally faster and easier as it is mostly downhill.
