One of the most popular and spectacular hikes in Madeira.
This hike takes you through stunning mountainous terrain, with breathtaking views of the island’s rugged coastline, verdant valleys, and rocky peaks.
Starting from Pico do Areeiro, the third-highest peak on the island at an altitude of 1818 meters, the trail winds its way along the mountain ridge, passing over several peaks and valleys. The path is well-maintained and easy to follow, but can be quite steep and rocky in places, requiring a moderate level of fitness and agility.
As you make your way along the trail, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, forests, and ocean. Along the way, you’ll pass by several interesting landmarks, including the curious rock formations of Penha d’Águia, the deep valley of Vale da Lapa, and the remote mountain village of Curral das Freiras.
The highlight of the hike is undoubtedly the ascent to Pico Ruivo, the highest peak on the island at 1862 meters. The final stretch of the trail involves a steep climb up a series of stone steps, but the reward is well worth the effort: from the summit, you’ll enjoy a 360-degree view of Madeira, with sweeping vistas of the island’s lush valleys, dramatic cliffs, and azure coastline.
