Levada Nova

Duration: 3h30min

The Levada Nova Hike is a half-day hike in Tabúa, in the municipality of Ribeira Brava, and walks west towards Ponta do Sol. This is an easy, flat hike through Levada, however, it's not recommended for people with vertigo. There are some parts with high and unprotected cliffs. Along the way we will admire fantastic views over the Tabúa Valley, Ribeira Brava and

Ponta do Sol.

Levada Nova received this name due to the fact that water only began to flow through the channel in 1962.

Along the way, we can observe agricultural land carefully cultivated by its owners. Sugarcane plantations are also a constant presence on this journey. In Madeira, the cultivation of sugar cane began in Funchal in the year 1425 and expanded along the South coast in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Nowadays, sugar cane is still used to produce the famous cachaça (moonshine), which is then used to make the well-known drink Poncha. Sugarcane is also used to produce cane honey, used to make traditional cakes and biscuits, a

true gastronomic heritage.

The fact that this tour is located on the South Coast, where the climate is better, makes this tour suitable all year round.
