Levada do Norte

Duration: 3h30min

We started the walk through Levada do Norte just after Cabo Girão, in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos, then we passed through the Quinta Grande and Campanário valleys, in the municipality of Ribeira Brava.

This is one of the oldest elevations on Madeira Island and took many years to build. It extends for more than 60 km, but on our route we covered only 6 km of its length. The path is easy and flat.

Like most levadas, this one was built with the purpose of bringing water from the North of the island to the South, with the purpose of irrigating the agricultural fields.

Along the way, we spotted the typical “Poios”, organized and maintained agricultural land. We can identify various types of vegetable and fruit tree plantations. Other types of trees that we can observe are eucalyptus and

mimosas.

Along the tour, we admired the breathtaking landscapes of the villages and their houses, the Ribeira Brava valley and the Atlantic Ocean.
