The Levada do Alecrim — Lagoa do Vento tour begins at Paúl da Serra where the area is covered by the lush vegetation of the Laurissilva Forest, classified as a Natural World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The first stretch of the walk is along a narrow dirt path hidden in the vegetation. Then we began to follow the Levada do Alecrim where the path is wide and vegetation is abundant on both sides
of the Levada.The Levada do Alecrim was built to receive and transport water from the Lajeado and Alecrim streams for the purpose of supplying the Calheta Hydroelectric Power Plant.
After walking a few meters, Levada joins a large water reservoir and some small lagoons where we can see trout swimming in the clear waters. Further on, we climb a ladder and continue to climb Levada
.Along the way, we can enjoy breathtaking views of the Rabaçal Valley and Ribeira da Janela.
When we arrive at the source of Levada do Alecrim, in Ribeira do Lajeado, we pause to enjoy the surrounding landscape of the small lagoon known as “Dona Beja”. There is also a small waterfall that descends from the rocks to the lagoon. This water will feed the Lagoa do Vento waterfall, which
is further down.With our energies recharged, we began our return along the same trail and then took a different path to Lagoa do Vento. This stretch of the hike is a bit more difficult, the terrain is uneven and can be slippery, especially on rainy days
.When we reach the base of the lagoon, we will be mesmerized by the beauty of the waterfall that descends from the top of the cliff. Here the silence is only interrupted by the sounds of nature
.Regarding the flora found on this hike, the landscape is dominated by high altitude moors, where heather, heather, blueberry, Madeiran orchid and milk thistle stand out.
