The Curral das Freiras tour is the perfect trip to start discovering Madeira. On this half-day trip, you'll see wonderful landscapes from the viewpoints and visit some of the most
beautiful villages. The first stop on this tour is at the Pico dos Barcelos viewpoint, located 355 meters above sea level. From this splendid location, you will have a 360º view of Funchal. In the background you can see the Deserted Islands
.Then we head to the “heart” of the island. The Eira do Serrado viewpoint is 1095 meters above sea level. From here you have a breathtaking view of the Curral das Freiras, which is located below, and of the majestic mountain of the central massif
that surrounds it.The next stop is the picturesque village of Curral das Freiras. It is located in a deep valley, which resembles the crater of a volcano. This is one of the few places on the island that is not visible from the sea.
The name derives from the fact that, around 1590, the nuns from the Santa Clara Convent in Funchal fled to this remote location when French Lutheran pirates invaded and plundered Funchal. They found this to be the perfect shelter to escape the attacks.
Finally, we take a short break in Câmara de Lobos. The beautiful fishing village is renowned for its magnificent bay with colorful fishing boats. Here you can try some local drinks, such as poncha or Madeira wine
