Levada do Rei

The Levada dos Reis begins at the São Jorge Water Treatment Plant. We walked to the source of Levada, known as Ribeiro Bonito. In this wonderful place, we rested a bit and returned the same way.

In the first part of the route, we cover an exotic forest composed of some specimens of the introduced flora. This initial section of the route presents us with panoramic views of the São Jorge and Santana farms. Here we can also see some herbs and medicinal plants that are still used as natural remedies

In the second part of the tour, Levada takes us to the interior of the island. Here we find one of the best preserved areas of the Laurissilva Forest, the native forest of Madeira,

Water is abundant in this area, and there is a small waterfall that cascades down to the trail. We can go through it or behind it.

The permanent presence of clear waters in this place intensifies abundant life forms and allows the development of a great diversity of species. We can observe the majestic centuries-old laurels of Madeira, the laurels, the mahogany of Madeira, the small birds such as the brazier

Upon arriving at Ribeiro Bonito we have the feeling of having returned to the time of discovering the island. Here the nature remains almost the same as it was many years ago.

While taking a short break, we can enjoy the sounds of nature, the water flowing in the stream, and the birdsong.

What to bring?

Depending on the time of year you choose to go sightseeing in Madeira and taking into account the change in the climate, you need to be well prepared for hiking in the Levadas and mountain trails.

Recommended equipment:

• Good shoes
Suitable boots or hiking shoes with good grip;
• Good jacket
An all-weather jacket is the perfect choice for outings;
• A flashlight
Bring a flashlight or your cell phone with a flashlight to help you cross some of the tunnels on certain tours;
• Bengal
A cane may be suitable and useful to make some of our guests feel more confident
