Go East tour

Duration: 8 hours

The Go East tour is an excellent trip, not only to enjoy the fantastic landscapes, but also to experience the culture, history and traditions of Madeira.

We started the tour with a visit to Terreiro da Luta, this area was already the last stop of the only rack train (Ferro do Monte) in Madeira. Here you can marvel at the “statue of the sanctuary of Our Lady of Peace” which is supported by

4 Roman columns.

The next stop is at one of the highest points in Madeira, 1818 meters above sea level. It offers a panoramic view of the central mountains. This is a great spot to take some breathtaking photos. After the mountains, we continue to Ribeiro Frio, in the heart of the Laurissilva Forest, classified by UNESCO as a Natural World Heritage Site. The Laurissilva Forest is a unique habitat with a diversity of rare fauna and flora

.

In Ribeiro Frio you can also visit the famous trout farm, where this particular type of fish grows in the fresh water that comes from Levada. Then we arrived in Santana. The village is best known for its traditional triangular houses. These houses are painted with bright colors and the thatched roof is made of straw. The break-in in Santana will take longer because it's lunchtime. We stayed here for about 90 minutes. There are several restaurants to choose from.

After lunch we went to the Portela viewpoint. It is located 670 meters above sea level, between Porto da Cruz and Machico. It provides magnificent landscapes with mountains that seem to flow through the valley towards the sea. However, the most striking element of this landscape is the imposing rock formation of Penha d'Águia

.

After spending most of the day in the North of the Island, we headed to the easternmost part of Madeira. From the Ponta do Rosto viewpoint, you can see the North and South coasts of the Island. Ponta de São Lourenço is a peninsula that measures approximately 9 km long and 2 km wide. Here the landscape is completely different from the rest of the Island. The semiarid climate and its exposure to the north winds sculpted the undergrowth and explain the lack of trees. In 1982 this area was declared a natural geological reserve with the main objective of preserving its fauna and flora

.

The last stop on our trip is a city steeped in history. Machico was where Gonçalves Zarco and Tristan Vaz Teixeira landed in 1419 when they discovered Madeira. The historic city center offers visitors a wide range of shops, cafés and restaurants. The stunning Machico Bay invites to a seaside stroll. In the bay you will find a small yellow sand beach imported from

Morocco.
