We’ll start our experience by visiting the Sé do Porto Cathedral, a 12th century building with a mix of architectural styles, dating back to the medieval origins of Porto, here we also see the Sé district, which surrounds the cathedral and is the oldest in town, while remaining faithful to Porto's traditions and customs.
We continue to São Bento train station, one of the most beautiful in Europe, here we can appreciate the approximately 20 thousand hand painted tiles that line its interior and illustrate part of the history of Portugal.
We’ll pass on the most commercial area of Porto, the Bolhão area, here we find the traditional market with local products, shops of all kinds and the busiest street in town, Rua de Santa Catarina, where the most luxurious Porto Café is located, the Café Majestic.
Then we head to the city center and pass by the most emblematic square in Town, Liberdade Square, flanked by Avenida dos Aliados.
Our next stop will be at the Carmo and Carmelite churches, we'll cross the Praça dos Leões and make a brief stop at the Lello bookstore, built in 1906, it's one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world, one of the mandatory stopping points for anyone visiting the city.
We're now heading to the Torre dos Clérigos, built in the 18th century, it's the tallest granitic tower in the city. Climbing “only” 225 steps we have access to a 360º perspective of the city center and surroundings.
We continue to the Cordoaria garden, one of the several green spaces in the city, located behind the Rectory of the University and close to the Portuguese Photography Center, the Justice Palace and the Hospital de Santo António.
LUNCH TIME
We will have a tasting lunch of regional products, such as cheeses, sausages and canned fish, accompanied by some wines from small local producers.
The Palácio de Cristal Gardens are our next stop, a magnificent botanical garden that hosts various cultural events and has unique views over the Douro River.
We pass through the narrow alleys of the oldest and most iconic neighborhoods in Porto, Miragaia and Vitória neighborhoods. We proceed to Praça do Infante, which houses the Palácio da Bolsa, São Francisco church and the old Ferreira Borges market.
We arrived at Ribeira, the last neighborhood of the 4 oldest in the historic center that we still had to visit.
We will cross the Dom Luis I bridge and make a short stop at the Serra do Pilar monastery to enjoy a glass of Port wine and contemplate the Douro River and the city of Porto on the other bank, surely one of the most beautiful views in Portugal!
We continue along the right bank of Douro, passing through the Arrábida bridge to Foz river mouth, where we´ll find the Atlantic Ocean. We’ll cross it’s main avenue to Matosinhos, a fishing area with beaches where we can regularly meet surfers. Here is also the largest urban park in the country, Parque da Cidade.
