Trek to the Path of the Gods

The

starting point of the organized trekking is Agerola, a village located in the Lattari Mountains in the shade of the Lauritano Castle surrounded by dense vegetation.
From here starts the Path of the Gods, a hiking route just under 8 km long that reaches Nocelle, a hamlet of Positano, giving novice hikers spectacular views of the Gulf of Salerno, the Faraglioni Capri, Punta Campanella and the entire Sorrento Peninsula.
Italo Calvino praised this path as “a world suspended over the magical Gulf of the Sirens” and his words are imprinted on a colorful ceramic plaque located at the entrance of the path.
The story tells us that this path was created at the time of the Bourbons to create a communication route between the various coastal villages, but the legend is quite different. In fact, it is said that when Ulysses had himself tied to the mast of his ship, complete with wax plugs in his ears to listen unscathed to the magnificent song of the sirens present at Li Galli Island, the gods decided to descend to Earth to avoid a shipwreck. However, the deities fell far from the island so they ran to the rescue of Odysseus, literally plowing the ground and thus giving life to the Path of the Gods.

The first part of the path, up to Santa Maria del Castello, is certainly the most demanding, since it is essentially all uphill, while the “low” path to Nocelle is rather easy. Along the path you are literally surrounded by silence and by the Mediterranean scrub made of rosemary, oak, strawberry trees and heather. There is no shortage of vines, prickly pears and citrus groves that make the brackish air even more aromatic.
Along what is considered one of the most enchanting trails on the planet, you will find a 15th century convent dedicated to San Domenico, the Cookie Cave rich in sediments dating back to the Pliocene and, a little further on, small rock agglomerations. Seeing these houses perched on the rock, it seems to be in front of a community of anchorites who have chosen the path to live isolated from the rest of the world. Don't miss out on the Pistillo, a limestone spire considered one of the symbols of the path. The

arrival point is Nocelle, a hamlet of Positano located on the side of Monte Pertuso: a staircase of 1550 steps separate it from the underlying Positano, easily accessible not before having refreshed yourself with lemonade or an invigorating lemon slush at the kiosk at the end of the Path of the Gods.

The Path of the Gods is a medium-difficulty trek, 8.6 km long, that allows you to walk to Positano starting from Bomerano di Agerola in about 5 hours.
The downhill difference is 793 meters, the uphill difference is 184 meters.
It is therefore a trek that requires excellent training, suitable only for people used to walking in the mountains, who are equipped with hiking shoes and suitable clothing. A hat and at least one liter of water per person are also necessary as the route develops completely in the sun and has no places of shelter.
The appointment is at 9:00 in Bomerano di Agerola, in Piazza Paolo Capasso, near the public fountain.
From Nocelle, tired people can reach the center of Positano by bus, thus reducing the trek by 3.1 km and thus avoiding the steep staircase with 437 meters of downhill difference that goes from Montepertuso to Positano.
