Entrance Tickets to San Martino National Museum and Charterhouse

The majestic San Martino Charterhouse stands on top of the Vomero hill, close to Sant'Elmo Castle.

Charles of Anjou started building the monastery in 1325, assigning works to architects Francesco di Vito, Mazzeo di Malotto, and Tino da Camaino. The construction was finished under Queen Giovanna in 1368.

Around 1580 the monastery was enlarged and almost completely rebuilt in 1623 by architects Dosio and Fanzago, turning it into one of the best examples for Naples Baroque.

The Charterhouse includes the monks' cemetery, the procurators cloister, the big cloister, and the church.
The vault still shows the original 14th century frame, as well as impressive frescoes by Giovanni Lanfranco, and paintings by Caracciolo, Finoglia, Reni, Ribera, and Stanzione. The Maddalena chapel, the Conversi Choir, the sacristy, and the fresco of the Treasure are very well preserved.

In 1866, Giuseppe Fiorelli founded the National Museum of San Martino, seat of the collection of art objects connected with Naples and the history of the southern kingdom.

Noteworthy objects of the collection are the presepe (nativity scene or crêche) figures of the 1800s. Don't
miss the “ presepe Cuciniello ”, which is mounted inside an artificial cave made from an ancient part of the Charterhouse’s kitchens. The animals, figures, objects, the three kings, the faces of the shepherds, the reconstruction of the workshops - every detail will give you an idea of the city of Naples as it was in 1700. The “presepe cuciniello” is one of the most beautiful and most important crêches found in Italy.

The Historical Section of the museum includes paintings, sculptures, furniture, medals, miniatures, coins, decorations, weapons, and relics from the political, economic, and social history of the reign of Naples.

The Gallery of Paintings contains important works of Neapolitan painting from the 16th and 17th centuries.

The Charterhouse of San Martino shares the highest point of the city of Naples with Sant'Elmo Castle. In addition to the architectural beauties of the monastery and the rich collection of the museum, unobstructed views of the city, the bay, and the surrounding countryside with Vesuvius reigning supreme make a visit to San Martino an unforgettable experience.
